joel came for a visit!!!

it was a short visit, but there were many people and places he was fitting in to a wedding trip, and i'm stoked i made the dance card!!!!
since there was only one dinner meal, we took him to the ulimate northampton-local experience, JOE'S CAFE!

i was sad to see joel go, but hopefully he'll be back soon! i know my brother will always be impressed with the way joel packed the moving truck, which he saw when i first was back.

western massachusetts sky

IMG_2702.JPG
i love this view. this is on cemetary road in hadley, aka the back road to the mall/umass. i've seen this particular slice of view since i was in elementary school. i find it particularly attractive, because i'm a big fan of fields-surrounded-by-woods. i don't know if this type of planning has any particular effect on the crops grown there, but i love the aesthetic. there also used to be a barn in this slice of view, but it fell down a few years ago.... in hadley, prolly because of all the historic buildings, you need to get a permit to tear a structure down. it would seem that most barn-owners prefer to just let their's rot to the ground. the barn i'm talking about i started watching in elementary school (let's say about 4th grade; 1977), went inside of it in high school (1985), and saw it's delapidation turn to deterioration to it's ultimate ruination (sometime during my first year in san francisco[1998]), during the span of twenty years. somehow, although it would seem to be counter-intuitive, i think it enhances the beauty of this slice of view for me, to have had this kind of experience with that immediate area.

antique car show

IMG_2685.JPG
today i took tessy to the antique car show up at look park....or did she take me?
IMG_2691.JPG
in addition to many cool cars, we also saw the little train coming out of the tunnel.
IMG_2693.JPG
i loved that ride as a kid, and tessy was surely enthralled by it today!
IMG_2695.JPG
IMG_2697.JPG
tessy was also enthralled with the water and all the waterbirds, while i thought the mini-theater looked so dramatic to me in the afternoon sunlight....
IMG_2696.JPG
i know that this may be pretty boring stuff to some of you sanfranciscians, but i've gotta tell you, it's really footing the bill for me right now. at some point i'll get a job, and then interaction with the outside world, and all it's activities, will begin, but for now, i'm savouring every moment of it!!!!

paradise pond

IMG_2667.JPG
if it's still early in the day when i take tessy for her afternoon walk, i like to go down around paradise pond. it's very pretty down there, with the sun streaming down between the tree branches, and everything reflected on the water's surface. however, i don't like going down there at twillight, as then i find it just plain scary...

during today's jaunt, i noticed a crane on the water....

IMG_2668.psd

i was pretty stoked that it was far enough away not to be scared off by the dog. crane's are such beautiful birds, don'tcha think? i think they're even more graceful than swans...it prolly has something to do with the legs, since both birds have such long necks...
IMG_2669.JPG

there was also some kind of party happening up at the president's house, which could be seen up the back walkway. how much more pretty any wooded walkway becomes, when there are party lights waiting up at the end! (i have no idea what the celebration was about, as i was headed in another direction.)

back from the beyond....

it boggles the mind how quickly the summer passed, and how it's all of a sudden back-to-school season. as evident from the history of this blog, i, too, took the summer off. however, with the cooling of the temperature, motivation to be in an upstairs room that has no air conditioning has seized me. i have taken TONS of picts over the summer, and at some point i'm hoping to put them up in an little collection of their own in the photo album section.

ted visited for the labor-day weekend. since he came out (from boston) on thursday, we decided to head over to umass on friday morning.

IMG_2653.JPG

IMG_2655.JPG
i kicked it in the cape cod lounge while ted went into herter hall. i was amazed there was so little seating, and disappointed that they'd removed the piano.
IMG_2656.JPG
we checked out the new dorms on our way off campus. i admit i was confused by the title "Northwest", when we found the dorms between "Northeast" and "Sylvain". i don't know where i expected them to be located, but it wasn't there...anywho, i think the planning behind them is great; apartment style living, on-campus. i know campus housing was always an issue at umass (there were always a few friends, or friends of friends who wound up living in the hotel until they could be placed in a permanent room), so i hope this alleviates some of that. i wish the pict better reflected the architecture of the buildings. i think the university did a good job on them!
in addition to going out to dinner friday night, we also went out to look park. i love taking tessy to the park, not only because of all the nostalgia, but because it's so pretty, and there's tons of pine and fir trees for tessy to smell (she seems to like those trees the best).
IMG_2662.JPG
there's also a small animal compound there, with deer and the like. here we can see the goats, who were FAR more interested in tessy, than she was in them. on the way out, i saw the "no dogs" sign; my bad! fortunately, the incident left no traumatized animals.
IMG_2664.JPG
well....maybe ted was traumatized a little bit....
